Again, Stapleton controls every scene with his undeniable presence. At times, it was hard for me to understand the thick Aussie accents. There is more erotic tension between the two men in each closely framed exchange than I recall in any film I have seen in recent memory.Ĭharacters outside of the love/hate triangle distract from the inevitable choices that must be made.
The close direction and crackling eye contact between Sparra and Pommie scorches the screen. The scene where he goes from asking a hooker if he is ugly to taking his sexual frustration out on another guy in a fight, left me on the fence about who was hurting whom. ‘Pommie’ unfolds layer after layer in one violent and vulnerable scene after another. Her relationship with Sparra is believable, even as the viewer starts to wonder where his loyalties lie. Jessica DeGouw reminds me of a young Julia Roberts from Mystic Pizza. It’s not too long before the audience redefines ‘mate’ and ‘ the way things used to be’. On the surface this seems like a predictable storyline…dude shows up and tries to get into his mates new life and take him back to the way things used to be. This year I think it will be the tight, intense, commanding performance of Sullivan Stapleton.
